about
'SID 6581' was written for the 2017 SPLICE Institute, and for the awesome violinist Abdel Anzaldua. The work is loosely based on the MOS Industries Sound Interface Device Chip, which was the primary sound chip for the earlier runs of the Commodore 64 computer. This work is performed as a dialogue between two instruments: the amplified violin, and an approximation of the SID 6581 chip built in SuperCollider and operated live by the composer.
I am indebted to Abdel for his wonderful performance and very helpful feedback on the work, to Per Bloland for his insightful and immensely vital critique of the work, and for the staff of the SPLICE Institute for giving me a chance to compose and perform this work.
